On August 25, 2020, the author of the book “In the grip of Katrina”, Kuba Kucharski, was a guest of Jakub Jamrozek in the “Private Zone” program. The topic of the conversation was broadly understood “racism”. During his stay at the “Superdome” stadium, Kucharski fought for survival together with 30,000 people. – Color of skin, wealth, age – did not matter. Each of us has shown our true self. On Friday, August 7, 2020, the author of the book “In the grip of Katrina”, Kuba Kucharski, was a guest of Elżbieta Lewicka and Szymon Taranda in the summer program of Polish Radio Rzeszów. During a two-hour conversation, he talked about how one of the deadliest hurricanes in US history – Katrina in New Orleans – survived. The author also mentioned his closest related plans, incl. translating the book “In the grip of Katrina” into English and preparing a film script based on the book. Immediately after the broadcast, Kuba Kucharski was a guest of TVP 3 Rzeszów in the program “Friday with the radio on television”, in which he mentioned that he became interested in British screenwriter who will be the first to work on a film script based on Kucharski’s book. In connection with the 15th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Aleksandra Rogowska Lichnerowicz prepared material showing the events of Hurricane Katrina through New Orleans from a different perspective, primarily parents who experienced this event in Poland. The material was released on Dzień Dobry TVN on September 14, 2020 and this is another element on the way to the goal of translating the book “In the grip of Katrina” into English, and then preparing a film script. Kuba Kucharski with the Cultural Award of the Mayor of Mrągowo

On November 23, 2020, Kuba Kucharski – the author of the first Polish book about the fate of students who survived the murderous hurricane “Katrina” in New Orleans, received the Cultural Award of the Mayor of the City of Mrągowo. The award for outstanding achievements in the field of artistic creation, dissemination and protection of culture of significant importance for the city of Mrągowo was presented to the resident of Mragowo by the mayor of Mr Stanisław Bułajewski. The Cultural Award has been awarded by the Mayor of Mrągowo since 2000. This year she found her way to Jakub Kucharski, a resident of Mragowo. Jakub Kucharski is a graduate of the 1st Secondary School of General Defenders of Westerplatte in Mrągowo. A journalist by profession. He studied at the Academy of Humanities in Warsaw. Bolesław Prus. He deals with internet marketing on a daily basis. Thirteen years after the events in New Orleans, in 2018 he published the book “In the grip of Katrina”, in which he described the events of the greatest hurricane in the history of the United States. “In the Grip of Katrina” the best book of 2018

Over 100 books awarded in quarterly plebiscites of the Granice.pl website (“Best book for spring”, “Best book for summer”, “Best book for autumn” and “Best book for winter”) competed in 14 categories for the recognition of jurors and Internet users in the oldest online competition and plebiscite “Books of the Year”, organized for 10 years by the editors of the Granice.pl website. Over 55,000 votes were cast. Which books published in 2018 will we remember for longer? In the non-fiction category, two items won the same number of internet users’ votes. The first of them was the publication by Kuba Kucharski “In the grip of Katrina” (Annapurna Publishing House). The winning book is a detailed account, almost a diary of the travels and tragic events of the hurricane. If these events did not take place in reality, it could be said that they are great material for an engaging and suspenseful action novel. The book is read instantly, with bated breath following the fate of the people described. It’s hard to break away from reading. The author proves that although making dreams come true is worth the sacrifices and inconveniences, it is always worth taking a cold and common sense approach to the proposed solutions beforehand. In extreme situations, such as war or natural disaster, people sometimes wake up demons who would normally remain dormant forever. Robberies are starting, crime is increasing. You write about it in your book.

At the stadium where we took refuge, on the second day the theft began. There is no denying that Superdome found people from social lowlands – criminals released from prison during the hurricane or dealers who also traded in drugs there.

In the following days shots from a firearm could be heard. I was also a witness to suicide. And all at this one stadium. I describe it in detail in my book. But in fact, at such times, the worst monsters can come out of people. Fortunately, on the other hand, there is no shortage of those who are eager to help others.

Poles will go to the USA without a visa … for 90 days

He did not fly to Poland, Poland flew to him. But at least this one autumn weekend gave us some excitement. US President Donald Trump announced today (October 4, 2019) that he has signed a document integrating Poland into the visa-free regime. It is true that there is still some formalities and time to make it all sound as it should, but today the headlines in the press have gone crazy, among them the most important: “USA without visas.”

What does this mean in practice? For me, a young man who sees the heading “USA without a visa” one association comes to mind – I will be able to go to the USA without a visa and work legally. Well no. Nobody’s so good. The inclusion of Poland in the Visa Waiver Program means that we will be able to travel to the United States without a visa for tourist and business purposes for a maximum of 90 days. The only condition that will have to be met is registration in the Electronic System for Travel Authorization. I wrote that no one is so good, because in terms of clarification, it is worth noting that to work in the US legally you always have to apply for a visa. And no matter if you are British, German or Russian. Nothing changes in this matter.

It is also worth mentioning that students who choose the Work & Travel program also still have to apply for a J-1 visa. Just like those who go to the United States to take, for example, apprenticeships (visas M-1, M-2) or study at school or university (visas F-1, F-2).

Polish boxing, muay thai, kick boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk reads my book “In the grip of Katrina”. It is extremely important to me, because it is one of those moments that give me a boost of energy for further activities. Asia is currently in the US, where she is preparing for the next fights. I hope that the book “In Katrina’s Embrace – My American Dream at Work & Travel Away”, the story I had to live during Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, will be for her a new and interesting look at how unpredictable our lives are.
